What Does Fitness Really Mean? Finding the Right Balance for You

March 18, 20253 min read

“Fitness is not about being better than someone else. It’s about being better than you used to be.”

What Does Fitness Mean to You?

When you hear the word "fitness," what do you think of?

If I asked a bunch of people, they would probably give very different answers. And guess what? That’s okay! Everyone sees fitness in their own way.

What Does Fitness Really Mean? Finding the Right Balance for You

With that in mind, let’s talk about the three main reasons people focus on fitness and why they matter! 💪

1. Health – Feeling Better

Not everyone wants to run super fast or have big muscles. Some people just want to feel better.

Maybe they want to sleep well at night, have more energy during the day, or feel less stressed.

Being healthy is important, but not all fitness activities actually make people feel better in the long run. That’s why it’s good to find a routine that really helps!

💡 Tip: Try activities that help your mind and body, like yoga, walking, or stretching!

2. Physique – Looking Better

Most people I know care about how they look. And that’s totally okay!

If working out and eating right makes someone happier and healthier, then great! But taking things too far—like trying to look perfect all the time—can actually hurt a person’s health.

It’s all about balance!

💡 Tip: Set realistic goals and remember that feeling good is just as important as looking good!

3. Performance – Being Better

Some people focus on fitness because they want to get really good at something. Maybe they play on a sports team, compete in races, or have a big goal they want to reach.

For them, looking better or feeling better might not be their main focus—it’s just a bonus! They are training to win, score points, or do their absolute best.

💡 Tip: Set small goals to track your progress, like running a little faster or lifting a little heavier!

Can You Work on More Than One?

What if someone wants to work on two of these areas—or even all three? That’s totally fine!

Just remember, if you want to be the best at one thing, you might have to give up a little bit of the others.

Most people try to keep a balance between all three for most of the year. But sometimes, they focus on just one for a short time—like training extra hard for a big game, getting in shape for summer, or taking time to heal an injury. That’s okay too!

💡 Tip: Listen to your body and adjust your fitness routine based on what you need at the time!

Make Fitness Work for You

The best thing you can do is make fitness fit your life. Don’t go to extremes that you can’t keep up with. Find a way to enjoy moving your body and feeling good every day.

💡 Final Thought: Fitness is different for everyone. What matters most is that you find what works for YOU!
